Ulrike’s Journey (Ulrike Kerber bio)

Ulrike Kerber -- the mother of Cosima (born in 2006) and Nikolas (born in 2008) -- has combined her love of reading and interest in child development with a background in graphic design, animation, and film. As the founder of Love to Read and Viva Design Inc., her work has been recognized with awards and nominations such as the Television Academy Emmy nomination, New York Festival, BDA, Omni awards, Type Directors' Club, and Art Directors' Club awards.

Ulrike Kerber studied communication design program in her native country of Germany at Hamburg’s Institute of Design (Fachhochschule für Gestaltung), which gave her a strong background in photography, illustration, calligraphy, typography, advertising, and other visual media. Then she spent a year in New York and began designing print material for the music industry (Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, John Cage, Eric Clapton). After returning to Hamburg, she designed more than one-hundred CD covers

Ulrike Kerber became intrigued with broadcast design and started working at the German SAT1 TV station. Here she learned animation on Quantel computers, a skill that came quite handy when she moved to the world’s entertainment capital in 1995. In Los Angeles, she worked at E! Entertainment TV and freelanced for contemporary design companies like Pittard Sullivan, Fuel, and Novocom.

In Santa Barbara she founded her own motion graphics company, Viva Design Inc. (vivadesign.com). Her company has produced award-winning TV station launches, as well as show and promo packages, for clients such as BET, Soapnet, Noggin, Sundance Channel, Discovery, Target, Family Showtime, Hallmark, OWN, Buster Design, Viva TV and Cosmopolitan.
